We ask all of our applicants to complete a criminal background check and child protection training through Adventist Screening Verification. The steps are outlined below:
- Go to www.ncsrisk.org/Adventist
- Select your home Union and Conference.
- Create a username and password, then enter information. Use full legal name.
- When prompted to "Please select the primary location where you work or volunteer," please select your home church.
- When prompted to select your role, choose "AVS Volunteer."
- You will be redirected to the training site. Once you have completed the training, you will be prompted to complete the background check.
Step 1: Go to www.ncsrisk.org/Adventist and click on the first-time registrant button.
Step 2: Select the Union and Conference where you work or volunteer.
Step 3: Create a user ID and a password you can easily remember. It's recommended to use your email address for your user name.
Step 4: Please provide the information requested on the screen. (Note: Do not click the back button or your registration will be lost).
Step 5: Select your primary location where you work or volunteer and click continue. If you work or volunteer in another location, please select "Yes" and then select the location.
Step 6: Select your role(s) within the organization (multiple may be selected).
Step 7: Click on the green circle to begin the online training.
Step 8: Please read the instructions regarding the details of the online training and then proceed. Select "Click Here" to begin the online training (Note: Training can take up to one hour).
Step 9: Upon completion of your online training, you will be instructed to complete your background check. Please complete the steps within the background check process (Note: The background check will only take 5-10 minutes).
Step 10: If you are a volunteer, you will be directed to complete the Verified Volunteers Background Check by clicking on "Complete the Verified Volunteers Background Check." Verified Volunteers will require you as a volunteer to claim your account using three pieces of information--email address, home zip code, and date of birth. You will then be redirected to the Verified Volunteers platform to confirm the details required for the background check. (Please be sure to enter your full legal name.)
Step 11: Review and complete the consent form.
Step 12: Confirm the information is correct and click submit. Once the background check has been successfully processed you will be notified via email.
Who is required to complete the background check and training?
All officially voted volunteer positions and church employees serving within North American Division and being sent from North American Division. This includes all adult volunteers who work with minors.

Why the transition from Shield the Vulnerable to Verified Volunteers?
Our contract with Shield the Vulnerable has ended.
Why Verified Volunteers?
After one year of researching and vetting, Verified Volunteer surfaced to the top as being the best fit for our Church organization.
Will the training element still be included in the background check process?
Yes, a Child Protection training is required before a volunteer can finish registering for the background check.
Will the training and process be offered in Spanish?
Yes, and it will also be offered in French and Portuguese in the future.
Will there be customer service available during and after the transition?
Yes, Verified Volunteers will provide a number for the volunteers and coordinators to call between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 8 p.m. EST. This will ensure that every time zone in our North American Division can have access to them.
Who is responsible for covering the expenses of the background check?
As the policy states, the church or school is responsible to cover the expenses. The billing process may vary, however, depending on the conference or union.
Will there be provisions for the volunteers to contribute should they choose to?
Yes, the new system has an optional feature that will allow the volunteer to contribute financially towards the background check if the conference makes this available and the volunteer chooses to.
What will the background check cost?
The background check and training will cost $14.00 per person.
Is the background check transferable?
Yes, with permission from the volunteer, background checks can be shared with no charge across other conference accounts or other Adventist locations. Also included is one free share to an organization outside of the North American Division group (e.g. a public school or Special Olympics).
If someone wants to share with more than one non-profit, the Fast-Pass allows for unlimited sharing across all Verified Volunteers accounts. That is $3.99 and is billed to the volunteer at the time of submission.
Will conferences and volunteers be notified when a volunteer is up for renewal?
Yes, Verified Volunteers will send out a notification to the volunteer and the conference communicating the need for renewal.
Will training be provided to the administrators of the system (conference or unions)?
Yes. Conference administrators can request training support from Verified Volunteers.
How long will it take for the report to come back on the background check?
There is a 2 to 3-day turn-around time.
